Tips On How to Avoid a Commercial Move Scam
If you have ever made a long distance move,
you know how stressful it can be. Moving is one of the top 10 most stressful
events a person can go through, right up there with divorce and losing a job.
Unfortunately, many so-called “rogue moving
companies” have mad an industry of taking advantage of inexperienced movers.
These companies attempt to gain your trust through low prices and inflated
promises. Very often, they do not give a full price quote until they are
already in your house, at which point they change the price. Falling prey to a
moving scam can wreak havoc on your commercial move. With that in mind, here
are some tips to prevent rouge moving companies from getting the best of you.
1. Check to make sure the company
is insured
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration (FMCSA) requires interstate carriers to offer at least 1 of 2
insurance plans, the first being full coverage of moved goods and the other
being reduced liability. Before hiring a company for your commercial move, make
sure they are registered with the FMCSA and they offer the right kinds of
insurance.
2. Do not take an over-the-phone
quote
Many fraudulent moving companies will attempt
to give you a moving quote over the phone before actually coming to inspect
your possessions. This is a red flag for moving fraud; legitimate companies
will send an in-person consult to take stock of your possessions and give you a
quote. Beware companies that try to give you a quote over the phone or via
email.
3. Do not make any payments up
front
Several scam companies will try to get
customers to put down large deposits before performing a move. This is also a
red flag. Do not give the company any money until they have given you an
in=person quote and they have actually performed the work.
4. Check to make sure they have
their own moving trucks
Many scam moving companies will rent out
trucks for moving. If on commercial move day a rental truck shows up instead of
a company branded one, it could be a sign of a moving scam. Some large
reputable companies do use rental
trucks, so if your chosen company has been well vetted this should not be an
issue.
5. Check the Better Business
Bureau for company reviews/complaints
Before hiring a company for your commercial
move check the Better Business Bureau. The BBB has a database of certified
moving companies and you can check for any official complaints against the
company. Avoid companies that have either only positive reviews or only
negative reviews as both could be an indication of a scam.
